The project concerns the construction of a multipurpose building to redevelop the port waterfront, achieved by creating continuity in the system of public spaces and pedestrian interconnections in the section between the S. Eligio pier and Piazza Fontana square. A series of sports, stopover and leisure facilities are located along this development. At the end of the basement is the multipurpose Service Centre, which serves as an attraction open to the sea and the city. The project offers great flexibility of use.
In particular, the following activities have been planned:
-
Management activities of the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea;
-
Activities for the promotion of maritime culture: multi-purpose auditorium - conference room and multi-purpose spaces for exhibition and educational activities;
-
Service activities for passengers and cruise passengers;
-
Service and reception activities (information, local authority representatives, relaxation area, bar, toilets)
Expected results
The construction of the multipurpose centre is intended to activate a process of redevelopment of the port waterfront and integration between the city and the port, creating continuity between public spaces and pedestrian interconnections that run from the S. Eligio pier and Piazza Fontana to the end of the S. Cataldo pier. The multipurpose Service Centre becomes an attraction open to the sea and the city, which, through a series of facilities and public spaces, enables a new set of relationships to be established between the town and the port basin. The aim of reviving a new maritime culture in Taranto can be achieved through this complex system that brings together the port, the city and the environment under a single banner.
