(Action and Cohesion Programme complementary to the NOP "Infrastructure and Networks" 2014-20 - AXIS B WATERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME)
On 14 July 2020, the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea (AdSPMI) submitted a second project proposal for Axis B "Waterfront Redevelopment" of the Action and Cohesion Programme complementary to the National Operational Plan (NOP) "Infrastructure and Networks" 2014-20. The project will allow the redevelopment and improvement of the interface area between the port and the city, by allocating more spaces, currently abandoned or poorly used, to community use. The result will be to ensure a "light" or pedestrian connection between central areas (railway station, old town, Porta Napoli area, yachting area) that are currently separated, revitalising the area and encouraging the establishment of commercial, recreational and cultural activities. The proposed set of interventions is intended to provide fresh urban appeal, following on from the action already undertaken by AdSPMI to redevelop the port and open up the port and its activities to the city. On the one hand, the proposed interventions will encourage the urban and environmental redevelopment of a potentially attractive area; on the other hand, a positive result is expected in terms of the development of the local economy to the extent that the area, especially the old town, will gradually become a destination for city users (workers, students, commuters, tourists), who currently prefer other areas offering a greater concentration of services and leisure opportunities.
The project, submitted in cooperation with the Municipality of Taranto, was accepted for funding with a total budget of €16,000,000.00.
