GSE and the Ionian Sea Port Authority launch an institutional partnership to support the energy transition of the Port of Taranto

ROME/PORT OF TARANTO, 02 DECEMBER 2025  - The Ionian Sea Port Authority – Port of Taranto (AdSPMI) and the Energy Services Operator – GSE S.p.A. signed an agreement this afternoon in Rome to launch an institutional collaboration aimed at promoting sustainable development and supporting the energy transition process of the Port of Taranto. Taranto is the first port at national level to have signed an agreement with GSE in the field of energy transition, confirming the proactive approach adopted by the Port Authority in seeking strategic institutional support for the decarbonisation and conversion of the Ionian port.

With the signing of the agreement, AdSPMI and GSE commit to activating a synergistic pathway focused on the analysis and implementation of concrete actions to improve energy efficiency, promote energy production from renewable sources and support sustainable mobility within the port area. AdSPMI will provide data, information and technical support relating to the port and infrastructure context, while GSE will deliver technical and specialist support on the regulatory framework and on the incentive schemes under its remit.

Key areas of collaboration include support in identifying opportunities arising from incentive mechanisms managed by GSE, the energy efficiency upgrading of AdSPMI’s property assets, as well as the promotion of renewable energy self-consumption configurations for energy sharing (CACER). The agreement also envisages the development of joint training and information initiatives on sustainability and renewable energy topics.

The collaboration launched today with the Ionian Sea Port Authority represents an important step in supporting a strategic national infrastructure on its path towards decarbonisation and energy modernisation,” said Vinicio Mosè Vigilante, Chief Executive Officer of GSE. “GSE is ready to support the Port of Taranto with specialised technical expertise that leverages the opportunities offered by incentive schemes and the current regulatory framework. Our support will focus on identifying effective solutions for energy efficiency, renewable energy production, self-consumption and sustainable mobility, drawing on data, analyses and expertise developed through the management of key measures in support of the energy transition. By defining a shared operational pathway, we aim to facilitate the implementation of concrete and replicable interventions capable of strengthening the port’s competitiveness and contributing to the improvement of environmental sustainability across the entire territory. This commitment is fully aligned with GSE’s institutional role as a partner of Public Administrations and seeks to build innovative and collaborative models consistent with national and European decarbonisation objectives. We are confident that this synergy will generate significant value and serve as an example for other Italian ports engaged in the energy transition”.

“The launch of this new institutional collaboration adds a further important building block to the ambitious project initiated by AdSPMI, aimed at developing a study for the planning of port areas to be dedicated to potential renewable energy production facilities. We are working with the academic community and a network of institutional stakeholders to take steps that we hope will prove decisive in consolidating the green strategy of the Port of Taranto,” stated Giovanni Gugliotti, President of the Ionian Sea Port Authority. “The synergy with GSE will enable the integration of expertise, tools, resources and incentives to make our port increasingly efficient, competitive and sustainable, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and with EU challenges related to energy transition and green ports”.
