PORT OF TARANTO, 4 JULY 2025 – Today, the interministerial decree has been signed, officially designating the Port of Taranto as one of the nationally recognised priority and strategic areas for the construction, assembly, and launch of floating platforms for offshore wind energy production.
Following the candidacy submitted last year by the Port of Taranto, together with the port of Brindisi, the green light had been awaited to begin the planning of initiatives related to the conversion of industrial activities towards sustainability. In the preceding months, the Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea had taken proactive steps, obtaining approval from the Superior Council of Public Works for the technical-functional adjustment of the Port Regulatory Plan (PRP), in order to immediately accommodate the new supply chain within the port areas by revising its planning instruments.
“With the signing of the interministerial decree designating the Port of Taranto as a strategic hub for offshore wind development, we mark a historic step towards a sustainable, innovative, and competitive future for our port community and for Southern Italy as a whole,” declared the Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea’s Extraordinary Commissioner, Giovanni Gugliotti. “The recognition granted to the Port of Taranto is not a coincidence: it is the result of intense work, forward-looking planning, and institutional synergy involving the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea has been able to channel this into intelligent administrative action. My heartfelt thanks go today to the entire team of the AdSP,” Gugliotti continued.
“This decree represents an unmissable opportunity for Taranto, as it consolidates the role of the Ionian port as a key industrial hub in the Mediterranean and a catalyst for new production chains linked to renewable energy. This is not just an infrastructure project, but a genuine visionary challenge capable of generating economic development, new skilled employment, and sustainable growth for the region”.
The total value of the investments provided for in the decree amounts to EUR 78.3 million, spread over three years starting from 2025. Taranto thus has the opportunity to create new industrial models in synergy with the steel industry, and to become – thanks also to its port – an engine of economic transformation, stimulating the local supply chain, encouraging the establishment of new companies, and restoring dignity to employment.
“With this decree, we are jointly building a fairer, greener, and more inclusive future, in which work once again becomes a driver of dignity and growth for our community – port and beyond,” concluded Gugliotti.
