PORT OF TARANTO, 28 MAY 2025 – The Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea – Port of Taranto has today finalised the administrative procedure for the granting of a State maritime concession pursuant to Article 36 of the Italian Navigation Code in favour of Vestas Blades Italia S.r.l. The concession agreement was signed at the Authority’s headquarters by the Extraordinary Commissioner, Sergio Prete, and the General Manager of Vestas Blades, Jonathan Hernø. The nine-year concession covers the “Domenico Daraio” Logistics Platform, a key maritime area that is set to become a strategic infrastructure for the handling and assembly of wind turbine components – marking a decisive step in the strategic and sustainable development of the Port of Taranto
The use of the platform represents a fundamental asset for Vestas, in support of its new production line for blades destined for the V236-15 MW super turbine, featuring blades measuring 115.5 metres in length. The concession will enable the company to manage the logistics of these components efficiently by integrating maritime transport with rail logistics and assembly operations – thereby enhancing the Port of Taranto’s role as a strategic intermodal hub for renewable energy.

As announced last November – following the positive opinion of the Port Management Committee on the concession application submitted by Vestas – the initiative was found to be fully aligned with the strategic objectives of both the Authority and the Port of Taranto (see related news dated 5 November 2024: link).
The concession also includes significant investment commitments and Vestas’ undertaking to source human resources via the Taranto Port Workers Agency, thereby generating new employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy. The project submitted by Vestas was selected for its strong alignment with the Port’s strategic goals, particularly in the areas of social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
The integration of wind logistics within the Port of Taranto will further consolidate the sustainable development model promoted by the Authority over the past three years, aimed at reconciling economic growth with environmental protection – for the benefit of the local community and the entire port ecosystem – with the goal of establishing Taranto as a Mediterranean hub for renewable energy.
The upcoming decree from the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security is expected to further strengthen the Port of Taranto’s role within the integrated logistics sector, increasing interest from investors keen to develop projects in offshore wind power and renewable energy more broadly – opening up new perspectives for growth and expansion in the Ionian port
