News of 07 April 2025 – Port of Taranto launches 5G project
PORT OF TARANTO, 7 APRIL 2025 – Thanks to the high speed and ultra-low latency of TIM's 5G mobile network, the port becomes smart. The Port of Taranto is transforming into a Smart Port through TIM's 5G network, enabling the integrated management of services and advanced solutions across various areas, including: ship arrivals and departures, container loading and unloading, logistics, warehousing, and internal container transport. In line with the goal of integrating the entire port ecosystem and promoting sustainable development, the digitisation of processes will also encompass video surveillance, environmental monitoring on land and at sea, and the safety of individuals and physical assets, as well as the monitoring of goods transit in both the customs-free zone and the EU area.
Port facilities will be equipped with digital control centres for the management and oversight of the entire digitally connected port, enabled by applications of Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Augmented and Virtual Reality, and Digital Twin technologies. Machines, cameras, sensors, and devices will facilitate real-time information sharing, enhancing logistical processes.
The project, implemented by the Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea – Port of Taranto in collaboration with TIM Enterprise – the Group's business unit dedicated to enterprises and Public Administration – represents a cutting-edge model that will enable the application of digital solutions in the port sector and related services.
Applications related to the 5G network infrastructure will also impact the Digital Transformation in the maritime sector concerning various types of vessels (5G MASS) and offshore platforms (so-called "Smart Ships"), both in terms of connectivity and high-value-added services, including onboard entertainment, IoT sensor services for monitoring onboard equipment functions, predictive and assisted maintenance, video surveillance, safety, and logistics.
"The Port of Taranto", stated the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea, Sergio Prete, "continues to implement the innovative framework that integrates digitisation, automation, and data-driven solutions to optimise logistics, improve efficiency, enhance safety, and reduce environmental impact through the new 5G infrastructure, which serves as a significant technological and economic enabler, also benefiting all operators within the port community".
