The Ionian Sea Port System Authority – Port of Taranto – in order to continue its work to raise awareness and foster collaboration for the protection of the natural environment within its territory, the health and safety of citizens, port users and port operators, bases its strategy on the three pillars of sustainability: respect for the environment, economic development and attention to social aspects. These aspects are of fundamental importance for a reality such as that of the Port of Taranto.
The Authority commits itself to:
- continuous improvement and environmental prevention including pollution prevention;
- ensuring compliance with mandatory environmental regulations and other environmental requirements signed;
- anticipating, as far as possible, the application of environmental laws;
- working toward activities and companies operating in port areas so that their action is in line with the Environmental Policy adopted by the Administration;
- publicising the measures taken in order to raise public awareness of environmental issues;
- addressing indirect environmental issues by promoting a culture of respect for the environment.
This commitment takes concrete form through:
- the systematic analysis and assessment of activities carried out in the port area that may interfere with the adequate maintenance of the quality of the environment;
- raising awareness and knowledge among users and operators, thereby fostering a shared spirit of cooperation and collaboration on environmental issues, with a view to achieving objectives aimed at improving environmental conditions for the benefit of the entire local community;
- the use of the best technologies relevant to the activities of the Sea Port System Authority, promoting their adoption among organisations within the relevant port area;
- digitalisation of administrative and port processes in order to simplify access for users and optimise the flow of incoming and outgoing goods;
- participation in European projects with a view to promoting – within the port cluster or more broadly across the territory – the principles of the circular economy and its applications in logistics and port activities and services.
The Ionian Sea Port System Authority – Port of Taranto is committed to fostering the widest possible cooperation and participation of local institutions, regulatory bodies, internal and external resources and all stakeholders, with a view to proposing the most appropriate measures for environmental prevention and protection.
This policy, which is maintained through the continuous improvement process promoted by the environmental management system, is adopted by all staff of the Sea Port System Authority and is made public to ensure its widest possible dissemination and implementation.
