START OFF OF OPERATIONS AT THE MULTIPURPOSE PIER OF THE PORT OF TARANTO BY THE SAN CATALDO CONTAINER TERMINAL S.p.A.
PORT OF TARANTO, 12.07.2020 – The first stopover of the container ship “Nicola” has started the operations at the Multipurpose Pier of the port of Taranto. The CMA-CGM vessel has marked the inclusion of the port of Taranto in the SSLMED Turmed Service operated by CMA-CGM connecting Taranto with Turkey, Malta and Tunisia with ships having a capacity up to 1.100 TEUs.
The terminal is operational again thanks to synergy with the new concessionaire “San Cataldo Container Terminal (SCCT)” which is part of the YILPORT Group, a key global player in the shipping sector, being the thirteenth terminal operator on a global scale with a 24% stake in CMA-CGM.
During the start-up stage of the terminal, mobile cranes will be used for loading and unloading operations; in addition, it is currently undergoing the revamping of the first portion of the quay cranes by the Danish company Konecranes which will allow a further boost in the productivity of the terminal.
The terminal, with an extension of 1 million square meters and a seabed whose depth will be dredged to -16.5 m by the end of 2021, represents an intermodal hub in the heart of the Mediterranean with a capacity of 2 / 2.5 million of TEUs, capable of accommodating the latest generation ships. The terminal is also equipped with 900 reefer plugs for refrigerated containers thus opening up a development scenario for the cold chain, in favor of the agri-food sector.
With the next calls, the terminal will also activate a railway service connecting the port of Taranto with the main intermodal hubs in central and northern Italy.
As stated by the President of the Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea, "The activation of the first feeder service represents the starting point for relaunching commercial trade. The competitive repositioning of the port of Taranto also as a gateway in the shipping and logistics lanes of the Mediterranean is now a reality. Thanks to the re-start of the operations at the terminal, it is possible to open up important perspectives for the internationalization of companies in Puglia and in the south of Italy."
